Capay Organic started in 1976 in the Capay Valley where the fertile soil and unique microclimate are perfect for growing organic fruits and vegetables. Kathleen Barsotti and her husband Martin Barnes stared the farm and with the help of some classmates from UC Davis started the farmers market in the 1980’s. It is a 2nd generation run by Kathleen and Martin’s 3 sons. They use a beyond organic approach to make sure they treat the land well. A big part of that is crop rotation, seed preservation, and finding unique ways to conserve water.

Additionally, the brothers founded a Non-Profit organization in memory of their mother who passed away in the early 2000’s. Another big part of Capay’s Beyond Organic approach includes its treatment and care for farm workers. On our farm we provide year round work, benefits, and even 401K’s for our farm workers which is often times unheard of.

Through the years Capay has built relationships with numerous other famers that are included in the farm to table program that is Farm Fresh To You. Some of these farms include Whiskey Hill (Corralitos), Tomatero Farms (Watsonville), Rocket Farms (Half Moon Bay), Happy Girl Kitchen (Monterey), Farm West Fungi (Moss Landing), Lakeside Organics (Aptos/Watsonville).
